§ I Foundation

What is a synthetic persona?

Synthetic personas are AI-modeled profiles of your target audience, built with psychological depth. They respond to your content the way a specific type of user would — and deliver reviews with reasoned, quotable feedback in minutes. They complement real user research; they don't replace it.

Every Persona is carefully built — from eight psychological layers, grounded in established personality and behavioral research (including Big Five and Kahneman/Tversky). Not a chatbot thrown together in a hurry.

  • 1 Biography Life story, occupation, environment
  • 2 Psychology (OCEAN) Personality profile — what makes them tick
  • 3 Cognitive Biases Typical reasoning errors and their triggers
  • 4 Emotional State Baseline mood and what tips it
  • 5 Cultural Context Values, Life-World, cultural background
  • 6 Behavior Everyday life, media, decision style
  • 7 Anti-Patterns What this person rejects or avoids
  • 8 Language Style, dialect, tolerance for anglicisms

“Why not just ask ChatGPT?”

ChatGPT can give you a quick take — and for plenty of things, that's enough. But if you want to test your actual target audience, a fixed frame helps: with Radical Personas, you pick specific, consistent profiles — each with a biography, values, and a decision style — that always judge by the same criteria. That makes results comparable: across multiple Personas and across repeated tests.

§ II The Difference

Test before you send — instead of waiting on open and click rates.

A send that talks past your list is a wasted shot at recipients whose attention you paid dearly to earn — and you often only find out when the open rate disappoints. With synthetic personas, you collect the feedback before the email goes out.

Time to results
Real send days after sending
Radical Personas about 20 min
Cost per test
Real send a burned list
Radical Personas < €2

A real send delivers hard conversion data that a synthetic test doesn’t replace — the time and cost advantage applies above all to early iteration before you hit send. Comparison illustrative; bars schematic.

“I subscribe to very little, and very deliberately — my time is scarce, so only what truly earns its place stays. The subject line still got me to open; then came the big marketing promises with nothing to back them up, and I was out. Those are exactly the spots I show you before they cost you an entire list.”

§ III Results

What you actually get.

Every Persona you select reviews your email against these criteria — with a Score and a reasoned quote on why something works or falls flat:

  • Subject line Would anyone open this email at all — based on the subject line alone?
  • Clarity of the message How easy is it to understand what the email is about?
  • Layout & structure Text formatting, readability, and visual design — how appealing is it?
  • Credibility & trust Does the email come across as credible — or more like spam and pressure?
  • Personal relevance Does the content connect with the recipient’s daily life, work, or interests?
  • Topic interest How much does the topic of the email interest this person in the first place?
  • Emotional response What feelings does the email trigger — and why?
  • Click / action Would this person follow the link or act on the call to action?
  • Keep subscribing? Would this person want to keep receiving emails from this sender?
  • Overall score One overall Score (1–10) from each Persona’s perspective.

“The subject line was precise — that got me to open. But then came the marketing filler and an offer whose terms I’d have to hunt for. That’s where I start scrutinizing instead of clicking.”

AI summary: The subject line draws people in and builds trust, but the promotional tone and vague terms undercut its credibility — for a time-pressed, skeptical reader, that's the most common reason to drop off between opening and clicking.

Katharina Steiner
Katharina Steiner
Clinic manager · synthetic persona
5.5/10
Why only 5.5 out of 10?
The subject line was precise, so I opened it. But then came the promotional tone with the big promises — and an offer whose terms I had to go looking for. That’s where I start scrutinizing instead of clicking.
What would it take to convince you?
Clear statements instead of marketing filler, and terms I can find right away — no hidden catches. My time is scarce; I read deliberately. Tell me plainly what this is about and what it does for me, and I’ll stay with you.
What did you like?
That the subject line was factual, not sensational — that speaks in your favor. Give the body the same clarity, and I’ll read to the end — and click.

In the Persona test, the young trainee instructor and the mid-career switcher debate our course page at the same time — and they thoroughly disagree. Exactly the friction we need before the season starts, not once the course is underway.

§ VI Questions

Common questions about newsletter testing.

What is a synthetic persona?

A synthetic persona is an AI-modeled profile of a target audience, built with psychological depth. It responds to an email the way a specific type of recipient would — and delivers a Review with reasoned, quotable feedback. At Radical Personas, every Persona is built from eight psychological layers (including biography, Big Five personality, cognitive biases, and culture) — not a one-line prompt. Synthetic personas complement real user research — they don’t replace it.

How accurate are synthetic personas?

The key benchmark: ≈85% replication accuracy, benchmarked against the test-retest reliability of human self-responses (Stanford HAI, Park et al., 2024 — preprint, n=1,052). Adoption tells a similar story: 73% of market researchers already use synthetic responses (Qualtrics 2025). Every Review at Radical Personas states its reasons, and the scientific basis is documented with sources.

Do synthetic personas replace real recipients and A/B tests?

No. Synthetic personas deliver fast, reasoned audience feedback before you send — they complement real tests; they don’t replace them for final validation. The open and click rates of your real list remain the definitive measure. Synthetic personas capture average perspectives more reliably than extreme positions.

How much does it cost to test a newsletter?

The free plan costs nothing: 2 Reviews per month, no credit card. Paid plans start from €29/month. A single Review costs under €3 — far less than a wasted send to your entire list.

How long does a newsletter test take?

About 20 minutes from pasting in your email to the finished PDF report — you don’t have to stay at your desk while it runs. With a real send, reliable open and click data only arrives days after the campaign goes out.

How is this different from a spam checker or inbox test?

Spam checkers and inbox tests mainly verify deliverability and technical rendering. Radical Personas is not a deliverability checker — it tests how recipients react to your content: subject line, clarity, trust, relevance, emotion, and willingness to click, from the perspective of specific target groups, with reasoned quotes instead of raw metrics.

Which personas review my newsletter?

From over 60 fully developed personas, you choose the ones that match your recipient list. Each has its own background, occupation, and decision style — and reads your email as a subscriber from that perspective. The library is strongest in the German-speaking (DACH) market, a plus if that’s where your audience is.

Can I use Radical Personas as an agency or for client projects?

Yes. You test any email campaign you’re authorized to work on and pass the PDF report on to your clients. From Pro (up), you get white-label PDFs (your logo instead of ours) and team accounts — built for agencies and client projects. For larger volumes, talk to us.
